Ashwagandha or Winter cherry
Scientific name: Withania somnifera

‘somnifera’ is a Latin word that means sleep-inducing.
Action: Winter cherry’s seed has sedative & anxiolytic
properties that helps to induce sleep.
Dose: Mix 2-3 drops Ashwagandha (Winter cherry) mother tincture in 1 cup normal water
& take 2 times (morning & night) daily after meal. Continue this
medicine for 40-45 days.
Side
effects: It has no major side effects. But over
dose can causes heartburn, gastritis, diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal
problems. Harmful for Pregnant women.
Kava Kava
Scientific name: Piper methysticum

Kava kava contains chemical constitute ‘kavapyrones’ that acts as muscle
relaxer.
Action: Psychotropic, Sedative, Centrally acting muscle
relaxant.
Dose: 1 capsule (300 mg) 2 times daily after meal for 30
days. Don’t consume capsule or tablet more than 600 mg per day & don’t use
more than 45 days.
Side effects: In some case it causes headache, dizziness, fatigue, indigestion, diarrhoea, depression, allergic reaction. Over dose causes skin disease, liver disease & liver damage. Harmful for pregnant women, lactating mother; patient who has heart disease, liver disease, recent surgery, depression, drug addiction.
Valerian
Scientific
name: Valeriana wallichii
Valerian extract acts
quickly & helps to induce sleep within 30 minutes after consuming.
Action: Sedative,
Hypnotic, Tranquilizer.
Dose: Mix 3-4 drops mother
tincture in 1 cup normal water & take before sleep for 30 days.
Side effects: It has no major side effects. But in rare case it causes headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea etc. Researchers are not sure how much it is safe to use in Pregnancy. But it is better to avoid valerian during pregnancy & lactation.
Passion flower
Scientific name: Passiflora
incarnata
Action: Sedative,
hypnotic, anodyne, anti-convulsant, anxiolytic.
Dose: Drink 2 tea spoon
passion flower syrup before sleep for 30-35 days.
Side effects: It has no
major side effects. But in rare case it causes drowsiness, dizziness. It is
unsafe for Pregnant women, lactating mother, patient who has recent surgery.
Motherwort
Scientific name: Leonurus
cardiaca
Action: Sedative,
hypnotic.
Dose: Drink 1 tea spoon
motherwort syrup 2 times daily after meal for 3-4 weeks.
Side effects: Harmful for
pregnant women, lactating mother & who has low blood pressure (because it
decreases heart beat & BP), recent surgery.
Scullcap
Scientific name: Scutellaria
lateriflora
Scullcap contains ‘Baicalin’ that helps
to induce sleep.
Action: CNS
depressant (sedative, hypnotic, tranquilizer), anti-convulsant,
anti-inflammatory.
Dose: Consume 1 tablet (250
mg) 2 times daily after meal for 2-3 weeks.
Side effects: It has no
major side effects. Unsafe in pregnancy & lactation.
Hops
Scientific name: Humulus
lupulus
Action: Sedative,
Hypnotic, Antimycotic.
Dose: Drink 2 tea spoon hops syrup
before sleeping for 3 days only. Don’t consume more than 3 days, otherwise it
will cause toxicity.
Side effects: Harmful in pregnancy,
lactation; people who has hormonal disorder, recent surgery, depression or
other psychotic disorder.
Catnip
Scientific name: Nepeta
hindostana
Action: Sedative,
hypnotic, anti-convulsant.
Dose: Mix 3-4 drops Catnip
mother tincture with 1 cup normal water & take 2 times daily after meal for
30 days. Never use more than 30 days.
Side effects: In rare case
it causes headache & vomiting. Don’t use catnip during pregnancy,
lactation; if you have PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), menorrhagia &
recent surgery.
Rauwolfia
Scientific name: Rauwolfia
serpentina
Action: hypotensive,
hypnotic.
Dose: The appropriate dose of
Rauwolfia depends on several factors. So, you should consult with your doctor
before taking it.
Side effects: It has many
side effects. It is harmful for pregnant women, lactating mother, patient who
has gall bladder disease (especially gall stone), liver disease, peptic ulcer,
GIT disease, asthma, arrhythmia, epilepsy etc.
Precaution:
1.
Use only
1 medicine from above medicines.
2.
Don’t consume
overdose or 2 or more medicines at a time.
3.
These
medicines can interact with other sedatives, hypnotics, anti-depressant,
anti-psychotic medicines; medication for asthma, diabetes, heart disease,
kidney disease or other medications.
4.
Don’t
take those above medicines if you already take any hypnotics medicine before.
(But you can take these after consulting with your doctor)
5.
If you
have diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, gall stone, epilepsy or serious
nervous system disorder or chronic illness; please don’t consume these
medicines without doctor’s permission.
6. Avoid these medicines during Pregnancy, lactation & after recent surgery.
