Besides it helps to proper synthesis & excretion of bile; storage of vitamins & minerals; excretion of toxins, drugs & some hormones etc. Hepatoprotective foods & herbs help to boost liver functions; on the other hand, liver damaging foods & herbs destroy liver texture, function & activities. Brain tonic & brain debilitating herbs

 

Brain is one of the vital organ in our body. It controls all the function of our body such as intelligence, creativity, emotion, judgement, thoughts, attention, memory, vision, speech, listening, learning, sleeping, eating, sensation, perception, movement of the arms & legs, the function of many organs etc. 

According to Unani philosophy brain tonics foods & herbs (Muqavvi dimag) maintain equilibrium among 4 humours (blood, phlegm, yellow bile & black bile) of the brain. Thus, it helps to increase the efficiency of brain, improves its function & regulates our internal body mechanism.



Now I will describe about brain tonic foods & herbs. Besides I will also mention some herbs that are harmful for brain.

 

Brain tonic foods & herbs:

1. Walnut/Akhrot

          Scientific name: Juglans regia

          Dose: Up to 12 nuts (60 gm) daily.

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Patient who has kidney disease.

 

2. Pistachio nut/Pista

Scientific name: Pistacia vera

         Dose: Up to 12 nuts (65 gm) daily

         Contraindication (who can’t use): Patient who has kidney disease.

 

3. Almond/Badam shirin

Scientific name: Prunus amygdalus

         Dose: Up to 20 nuts (30 gm) daily

     Contraindication (who can’t use): Patient who has kidney disease, allergic reaction.

 

4. Hazel nut/Funduk

Scientific name: Corylus avellana

          Dose: Up to 30 gm daily

     Contraindication (who can’t use): Patient who has kidney disease, allergic reaction.

 

5. Sweet fruits.

6. Chicken soup.

7. Wax gourd/Kadu (Benincasa hispida)

 

8. Raisin/Munakka

Scientific name: Vitis vinifera

          Dose: Up to 15 raisins

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Colic disease

 

9. Ginger/Zanjabeel

Scientific name: Zingiber officinale

          Dose: 12 grams per day

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Hot temperament people.

 

10. Coriander/Kashneez

Scientific name: Coriandrum sativum

          Dose: 18 grams per day

        Contraindication (who can’t use): Patients who has respiratory disease.

 

11. Cloves/Karanphul

Scientific name: Syzygium aromaticum

          Dose: Up to 5 gm per day

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Daily consumption of clove causes infertility.

 

12. Emblic myrobalan/Amla

Scientific name: Emblica officinalis

          Dose: Up to 12 gm per day

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Patient who has spleen disease, has recent surgery.

 

13. Chebulic myrobalan/Haritaki

Scientific name: Terminalia chebula

          Dose: Up to 7 gm per day.

        Contraindication (who can’t use): Pregnancy, during lactation, weak people, patient who has bleeding disorder, has recent surgery.

 

14. Lavender/Ustokhuddus

Scientific name: Lavandula stoechas

          Dose: Up to 15 gm per day.

          Contraindication (who can’t use): After recent surgery.

 

15. Salvia seeds/Tukmari

Scientific name: Lallemantia royleana

          Dose: Up to 10 gm per day.

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Daily intake of salvia seeds cause constipation.

 

16. Nut grass

Scientific name: Cyperus rotundus

          Dose: Up to 3 gm per day.

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Patients who has constipation.

 

17. Indian valerian/Sumbulut-tib

Scientific name: Valeriana jatamansi

          Dose: 2-5 gram daily.

         Contraindication (who can’t use): Pregnancy, during lactation, Patient who has kidney disease.

 

18. Catnip/Badaranjboa

Scientific name: Nepeta hindostana

          Dose: Up to 7 gm per day.

      Contraindication (who can’t use): Pregnancy, during lactation, Patient who has lumbago.

 

19. Sandal/Chandal

Scientific name: Santalum album

          Dose: Up to 7 gm per day.

        Contraindication (who can’t use): Pregnancy, during lactation, Patient who has kidney disease (prolonged intake of sandal causes kidney damage).

 

20. Saffron/Kumkum

Scientific name: Crocus sativus

          Dose: Up to 250 mg per day.

          Contraindication (who can’t use): 1st 3 months during pregnancy.

 

21. Rose/Gule surkh

Scientific name: Rosa damascena

Dose: Fresh flower 7 gm or dry flower 4 gm or rose water up to 15 ml per day.

Contraindication (who can’t use): Patient who has chronic catarrh, runny nose.

 

22. Jasmine/Chameli

Scientific name: Jasminum grandiflorum

          Dose:  Fresh flower 7 gm or dry flower 4 gm or rose water up to 15 ml per day.

          Contraindication (who can’t use): Pregnant women.

 

23. Pearls/Marwarid (Mytilus margaritiferus) 

24. Moschus/Meshk (Moschus moschiferus)

25. Ambergris (Ambra grasea)

         

Herbs that are harmful for brain:

1. Cherry plum/Alobukhara (Prunus communis)

2. Citron/Utrooz (Citrus medica)

3. Jujube/Unnab (Zizyphus jujuba)

4. Asafoetida/Helteet (Ferula foetida)

5. Pine/Behrooza (Pinus longifolia)

6. Nicotine.

7. Sulfur. 

Regular use of these herbs cause injury to brain. But these herbs are used in medicines for other ailments.
