Liver is the largest vital organ of human body. The main function of liver is metabolism of carbohydrate, protein & fat. Besides it helps to proper synthesis & excretion of bile; storage of vitamins & minerals; excretion of toxins, drugs & some hormones etc. Hepatoprotective foods & herbs help to boost liver functions; on the other hand, liver damaging foods & herbs destroy liver texture, function & activities. Haritaki for liver disease



Scientific name: Terminalia chebula

English name: Chebulic Myrobalan

Haritaki is a well-known deciduous tree. The leaves are much like as the small leaves of Jamrul (water apple tree). It’s fruits and seeds are used.

The main function of Haritaki is that, it is Bile sedative; means it is very helpful in releasing excess heat from the body.

As like as Amla, Haritaki can be eaten in many ways.

(i) Raw fruits can be chewed.

(ii) Make fine powder of dried fruit and can be eaten mixed with water, honey or made into medicine.

(iii) Extract of dried fruit can be taken.

(iv) Haritaki jam can be prepared and eaten.


***Raw Haritaki is rich in Vitamin C so it is very effective in curing scurvy, bleeding gums, pyorrhea, skin diseases etc. 

Moreover, it is very effective in relieving constipation as it contains a lot of fiber. 

It also prevents anorexia

***Haritaki powder is used to make medicines for various diseases, such as diseases of the brain, diseases of the liver, skin diseases and diseases of the respiratory system etc.


***Haritaki's extract is bile sedative. It prevents burning sensation of hands and feet, as well as it cleanses the blood and relieves body aches

***Haritaki jam is very effective in brain diseases. It is used to treat headaches, insomnia and amnesia.

According to DOS (Doctrine of Signature) & TOS (Teachings of Similarity) therapy, Haritaki looks like eyes so it is effective in eye diseases. Studies have shown that Haritaki is very effective in curing eye diseases including conjunctivitis, stye, chalazion, red eyes, watery eyes etc.

Similarly, extract of Haritaki is darker in color which indicates that it works very well in various diseases of the liver. It helps to increase the secretion of various enzymes in the liver and metabolism. Studies have shown that Haritaki cures jaundice.

Dosage and rules: -

5-6 grams of Haritaki powder i.e. 1 teaspoon of powder can be eaten daily. The dose for children is half of that. 1 Haritaki jam can be eaten once a day (not more than 1). Raw fruits can be eaten 3-4 pcs daily.

Burning sensation of hands and feet: -

Half crushed 3-4 dried Haritaki soak in 500 ml of water for overnight and in the morning boiled it until water become half. Then cool it & filter it. Mixed some sugar and drink the mixture on an empty stomach in every morning for 45 days.

Cure Jaundice: -

Half crushed 3-4 dried Haritaki soak in 500 ml of water for overnight and in the morning boiled it until water become half. Then cool it & filter it. Drink this mixture after breakfast till jaundice is completely cured.

To relieve constipation: -

Every morning on an empty stomach 1 teaspoon of Haritaki powder mixed with 1 glass of lukewarm water should be drunk. It also helps to lose weight.

Cure various diseases of the liver: -

Mix 0.5 teaspoon of Haritaki powder in 1 cup of cold water and drink it twice a day after meals. (Cold water must be used, hot water cannot be used).

To relieve body pain: -

Half crushed 4-5 dried Haritaki soak in 750 ml of water for overnight and in the morning boiled it until water become one-third. Then cool it, filter it. Divide this mixture in half & take twice a day after meals for 30 days.

In various eye diseases: -

Half crushed 7-8 dried Haritaki soak in 1000 ml of water for overnight and in the morning boiled it until water become one-third. Then cool it, filter it. Divide this mixture in half. One part for eating and the other part for external use.


Eating portion should be taken twice a day after meals.

For external use : Wash your eyes thoroughly with Haritaki’s extract 3-4 times a day. Haritaki is rich in anti-bacterial & anti-fungal ingredients; So external use of it acts as a natural eye drop.

Diseases of the brain: -

1 Harikati's jam once daily removes various complications of the brain including headache, insomnia, anxiety and amnesia.


Warning: -

Haritaki never be given to pregnant women, lactating mothers, frail persons, post-operative period and those who have bleeding disorder. People with gastritis should not eat Haritaki in an empty stomach. Eating too much Haritaki is harmful to health.
